Today I learned another lesson about taking a step back and making good use of my money. AND about how I need to focus on where I am spending my money.
Here’s the story. I’m a big time basketball fan (as can be assumed by my last post). Anyway, I love BYU and am a member of their online athletics site. SO, they sent an awesome email deal giving lower chair seats for only FIVE BUCKS! It’s the last home game of the season and my favorite player is a senior, therefore his last game at home…EVER! So, I jumped at the chance, bought my tickets, sat back, and gloated at taking advantage of such an amazing offer.
Oh wait…then I remember I have a prior committment on Saturday night at exactly the same time as the game. A committment that I can’t back out of. I’m an idiot!
I should know better. An essential part of a personal budget is to understand what you’re buying, how it will impact your budget, and if (or how) you will be able to use the purchase. You can’t just buy something without analyzing the purchase first!
Moral of the story–always make sure you can USE the purchase! I bought something spontaneously and will end up having to eat my ticket (or give it away). Either way, I just spent money that I shouldn’t have spent. I guess we live and learn in the financial world. At least it was a relatively small amount…that’s the positive side.
