Boss coming over and you don’t have the funds to spruce up the place? Consider these free or inexpensive options for making your living area more impressive and livable.

Spruce Up Your Space

Get your couch in the right spot. As a central element in your living area, your couch plays an important role in the feel of the room. Let it face an open area like a window or a door. It will open up your room and make it seem like you put the furniture there on purpose.

Add shelves. It will make your home look organized- but also lived in. It’s a way to give clutter (books and picture frames) a place. Shelves with a few books and other odds give visitors something to look at/touch. Additionally, shelves with things on them let you indirectly express yourself and your interests to visitors.

Don’t make the TV a central focus. Doing this will make your living room more interesting and tells people that your free-time includes thing of more interest than the glow of the television.

Let the sun shine through. Sunlight and open window areas make a room seem bigger and more open. Additionally, your space is brightened naturally, giving the room a pleasant glow.

Use appropriate lighting. For evening visits when the sun isn’t available to light your room, be sure to position multiple light sources around the living area. Light over the coffee table can make an important difference in how comfortable your living room feels. Give yourself and your guests the option of turning on as much light as you’re comfortable with. Lamps at different levels can be just the trick.
